Dear Friends

This is well worth reading and ‘pondering’ during this season of Lent:

VATICAN COUNCIL ON THE CHURCH IN THE MODERN WORLD. N.10

Others delude themselves that they have found peace in a world-view now fashionable.

There are still others whose hopes are set on a genuine and total emancipation of mankind

through human effort alone and look forward to some future paradise where all the desires of

their hearts will be fulfilled.

Nor is it unusual to find people who having lost faith in life extol the kind of foolhardiness

which would empty life of all significance in itself and invest it with a meaning of its own devising.

Nonetheless, in the face of modern developments there is a growing body of men who are asking the most fundamental of all questions or are glimpsing them with a keener insight: what is man? What is the meaning of suffering, evil, death, which have not been eliminated by all this progress? Are these achievements worth the price that has been paid? What can man contribute to society? What can he expect from it? What happens after this earthly life is ended?

The Church believes that Christ, who died and was raised for the sake of all, can show man the way and strengthen him through the Spirit in order to be worthy of his destiny: nor is there any other name under heaven given to men by which they must be saved. The Church likewise believes that the key, the centre and the purpose of the whole of man’s history is to be found in its Lord and Master. She also believes that in all these upheavals there is a great deal that is unchanging, a great deal that has its ultimate foundation in Christ, who is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Despite the information on the heading of this "Newsletter" my correct address is:

St Oswalds

126 Southend Road

Wybourn

SHEFFIELD S2 5FT

0114 272 3881

I have been unable to work out the process for changing the heading, but have high hopes for next month. The move to Sheffield, although extended over three weekends, was reasonably smooth and I am ‘sorted’ in most things. If you wish to contact me concerning Marist Way or Marist Pilgrimages please use the Sheffield address.

Provincial Elect Fr Hubert Bonnet-Eymard:

On February 11th the election of Fr. Hubert Bonnet-Eymard as new Provincial of Europe was announced. He will take up his mandate on July 3rd, at the end of the Provincial Retreat in La Neylière. Until that time he will continue his sabbatical and preparation for the office. He will participate at the meeting of the Council of the Province and of the Provincial Council in Santa Fede, Italy, between 8th and 13th of March. May the Lord continue to bless him in his new responsibilities. Fr. Joaquin Fernandez will continue as acting provincial to deal with the normal business of the Province.

The Region of England held its Assembly at the beginning of February. The agenda was composed of a series of questions posed by Fr. John Hannan to the Region at the end of his visitation last year. These were considered in the light of information from the General Chapter documents. With the help of a facilitator, the members of the Region identified the topics on which the Region will concentrate over the next few years: ministries, community, vocations and care of the elderly.
